NMSU Education Abroad Fair

Each semester, the NMSU Office of Experiential Learning coordinates a education abroad fair to inform students about opportunities to study at partner schools throughout the world.  We always recommend trying to have the experience of studying abroad - especially to learn a language - but also because it's a great experience for real-life learning.

One of our most popular programs for learning Spanish is going on one of our group trips with a member of the NMSU Spanish Department to Costa Rica. Check out this page with some pics and videos of others that have traveled to Costa Rica for Spanish language and cultural immersion.

Aggies en Costa Rica

Spring 2021 - jueves, 11 de sept - de 10am - 2pm

Do this for your Spanish class and earn points in your 3Cs Portfolio!

Due to the fact that there are some travel restrictions for many of these countries and our representatives who normally travel here to NMSU won't be able to, this semester's fair will be a virtual.

There are many partner schools that work with NMSU to provide opportunities to live and study abroad - and even have virtual learning experiences with schools abroad. We have arranged with some of our partner schools to have some information sessions where you can sign up to participate in a virtual session and learn about the countries and cultures of the sites mentioned. You can also find out about what it is like to study with any of these groups.

Here's how it will work:
  • You will earn 5 points for each information session you attend (see list below).
  • For 5 additional points, please write up something you learned about the programs you visited and what a plan might look like for you to study abroad (this is like a wish list).

Pick your own pathway through this experience - possible scenarios, though the possibilities are endless:
  • Attend one (1) session only with no write up submitted = 5 points
  • Attend one (1) session only and submit a write up about your experience = 10 points
  • Attend 2 sessions and DON'T submit a write up = 10 points
  • Attend 2 sessions and you DO submit a write up = 15 points
  • Attend 3 sessions and you DON'T submit a write up = 15 points
  • Attend 3 sessions and you DO submit a write up = 20 points
  • Well, you get the idea.....  it's always best to submit the write up...

What do I submit? Your instructor will open a space in your Canvas course for you to submit:
  • Confirmation of registration and attendance at each session you decide to attend.
  • Your write up on the experience should you wish to receive the additional 5 points.
  • Please put everything together in a Word Doc and submit it through Canvas.

IMPORTANT
If your class regularly meets on T and TH - your class for this day (Thurs., Feb. 11) will be to sign up and attend some sessions at the fair. You will not have your regular class.

If your class meets on M and W, or your class is entirely online, this can be done whenever you are free to do so.

Remember, all of the points earned from this experience are part of your 3Cs Portfolio - or check with your instructor to see how they will apply them.

BEST PRACTICES FOR THIS ACTIVITY
It is best to sign up BEFORE the event.  To do so, click on the image below and follow the instructions to sign up for the different sessions.  There are also other representatives from other areas of the world...  please feel free to explore those as well.  The website should have information on all the sessions available - the ones listed here deal with intensive Spanish language and culture programs.

AGAIN - YOU MUST REGISTER FOR INFORMATION SESSIONS BEFORE THE EVENT STARTS - LIKE THE DAY BEFORE AT THE LATEST, THOUGH YOU CAN SIGN UP THE DAY OF THE FAIR AS LONG AS IT IS BEFORE THE SESSION START TIME!!!

Here are some additional instructions from the office of education abroad:
  • Group Sessions: It is very important that you join the group sessions a few minutes early. As soon as the session starts, the group sessions will be locked and you will not be able to join. You can’t even join 1 minute late, so, you must join the sessions preferably a few minutes early or you will not miss out.
  • If you are interested in a 1:1 (one-on-one) Session with one of the session sponsors: you can only schedule 1 – 1:1 session with each provider. If you miss your 1:1 session, Handshake will not allow you to schedule another one, even if the provider has available appointment slots.
