Cultura virtual

Obviously, with our links to all parts of the work via Internet, we can visit all kinds of places and learn all kinds of things. For university and some high school students, these activities would be great to do.

Check out this activity on a famous Spanish architect and designer:

Antonio Gaudí

UNAM - La Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

One place in Latin America where cities and university campuses combine is the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), in Mexico City. It is located in what is called the Ciudad Universitaria (University City). For this activity, we’re going to watch a recruiting video with information on this important educational institution. Before watching the video, we’ll go through some preparatory activities that will help us understand as much as possible. When you do watch the video, we recommend clicking on the CC (Closed Captions subtitles) button option so that you can see the text of the video move by. It will be in Spanish, but that is on purpose.

Make sure to read though all the activities below before watching the video.
Antes de ver el video

When watching authentic videos and movies, or reading authentic materials in Spanish, it is important to understand the context in which the material is set. As we mentioned, this video is recruiting video for UNAM. The video is no different

     1. To gain some context, what does your university’s recruiting video cover and look like? These may be commercials for television or ads online.

          a. What degrees, if any, does your university’s video mention?

          b. What areas of interest or majors does the video present?

          c. Does your university have a motto or a slogan? If so, what is it?

     2. The video on UNAM specifies different degree types that they offer:
The word for degree in Spanish is:  título
Bachillerato – roughly the equivalent to an advanced high school diploma, sometimes an associates degree.
Licenciatura – roughly the equivalen to a bachelor’s degree
Posgrado – graduate degrees, to include a master’s degree and/or doctorate (doctorado)

     3. Vocabulario – here are some words that you will hear in the video. Several of them you already know. Another good idea is to use what you do know to       figure out what you don’t know.

            alumnos – estudiantes                         académicos – profesores/instructores
            ciencia                                                 tecnología
            compartir                                             humanidades
            aprender                                              carreras – majors
            filosofía                                               ciencias nucleares
patrimonio cultural de la humanidad    observatorio
            cosmos                                                sismológico
            herbario                                               jardín botánico
            bibliotecas                                           plantas
            cines                                                    orquestras
            museos                                                plan de estudio

Al ver el video

When watching a video in a language you are learning, ideally, you will watch the video more than once. Like the listening exercises you frequently do, it is always a good idea to read through the questions you will be answering. We recommend watching the video three times. Follow the instructions given for each ronda.

Primera ronda – watch the video straight through without stopping and write down several vocabulary words you recognize from the video, don’t forget to turn on the CC (closed captioning).

Segunda ronda – watch the video a second time, this time pausing at different places and making additional notes. Try to answer at least three of the following questions:

     1.  From the visuals you saw, what are some of the majors you can study at UNAM?

     2. What are some of the other resources you saw that UNAM offers? (TV and Radio stations, for example?)

     3. What are some of the sports (deportes) and other physical activities that UNAM offers?

     4. How many Nobel Prize winners have been students at UNAM?

     5. How many students attend UNAM? How many professors? How many additional workers?

Tercera ronda – watch the video one last time to confirm you answers and try to pick up something new. Write at least two new things you picked up this time around.

Después de ver el video

Now that you have seen the video a number of times, answer these questions about your viewing  experience.

List at least three similarities you noticed between your university and UNAM.

List at least three differences you noticed between your university and UNAM.

What impressed you most about what you learned about UNAM?

There are two slogans or mottos near the end of the video, please explain in your own words what you think they mean.

            Nuestro momento es ahora

Somos la universidad de la nación (which also happens to be the title of this video).
